Windows Basics: Working with Files

ReFS (Resilient File System) is a newer file system for Windows 11, 10, and 8 that includes features not available with NTFS, but it’s currently limited in several ways. If you want to select all files in a folder at the same time, open the folder in File Explorer and press Ctrl+A (press and hold the Control key on your keyboard, then press A).

Once the data is physically placed on the storage device, the change is committed to the filesystem. The idea is instead of writing to data blocks one at a time during a write, the allocation requests are accumulated in a buffer Computer filing system and are written to the disk at once. The data structures of each block group, including the block bitmap, inode bitmap, and inode table, are  concatenated  and stored in the  first block group  within each flex block group.

Unix and Unix-like operating systems

Partitioning is splitting a storage device into several  logical regions, so they can be managed separately as if they are separate storage devices. A storage device without a file system would be in the same situation – and it would be a useless electronic device. Above all else, be consistent with file naming throughout your organization.

There are plenty of ways to title your subfolders for projects, but one of the most intuitive is to have folders for stages of your project. This way, you can always know which is the final project file to grab, rather than depending on misleading filenames like “Work Document Final FINAL FINAL2 FINAL3,” a common kind of torture with shared files. Don’t be afraid to grab a pen and paper and outline your folder structure before you go moving things around or renaming files or folders.

Metadata

To the left is a graphical representation of how you could organize these items. The structure contains two hanging file folders — one for bills and one for bank statements. To further organize your bills, you have chosen to insert two manilla folders, one for each type of bill that you pay. Doing this will make it easier to find a particular bill in the future.

Files are recognized by their characteristics (like a type of file, author, topic, etc.) rather than hierarchical structured management. By using tags, a good folder structure, and intuitive file naming, grabbing a file from your hard drive or from cloud storage should be a breeze. In addition to creating a folder structure that works for you, consider tagging files (on Mac or on Windows). Say, for example, you wanted to see all of your New Year’s Eve photos—not just the ones from last year but also the ones from previous years. Or maybe you want to see all of your photos for all of your holiday celebrations. You can set up a tag for “holidays” and another for “New Year’s Eve.” And then to narrow down the results, you can search using those tags.

Shared disk file systems

The search function is a wonderful thing but it will never match the ease of being able to go directly to a folder or file. If you follow these file management tips consistently, even if you don’t know where something is, you know where it should be – a huge advantage when it comes to finding what you’re looking for. Hierarchical file system (HFS) was developed for use with Mac operating systems. HFS can also be referred to as Mac OS Standard, and it was succeeded by Mac OS Extended. Originally introduced in 1985 for floppy and hard disks, HFS replaced the original Macintosh file system. File systems can also restrict read and write access to a particular group of users. Along with controlling who can modify or read files, restricting access can ensure that data modification is controlled and limited. In the GPT partitioning scheme, the first sector of the storage device is reserved for compatibility reasons with BIOS-based systems.

This is the kick-off of your actual filing process, so think carefully about how you group your documents. On macOS, the filetype can come from the type code, stored in file’s metadata, or the filename extension. Unix-like operating systems often include software and tools that assist in the mounting process and provide it new functionality. Some of these strategies have been coined “auto-mounting” as a reflection of their purpose.

Most modern file systems allow filenames to contain a wide range of characters from the Unicode character set. This results in unused space when a file is not an exact multiple of the allocation unit, sometimes referred to as slack space.[10] For a 512-byte allocation, the average unused space is 256 bytes. The size of the allocation unit is chosen when the file system is created. Choosing the allocation size based on the average size of the files expected to be in the file system can minimize the amount of unusable space.

This will create a shortcut directly to that folder, giving you 1-click access. In general, only create new folders if you find yourself repeatedly coming back to save similar files in the same place, only to find that it doesn’t exist yet. You’ll know when it is time to create another level in the hierarchy rather than creating a vast extensive multi-layered tree before you need it. Since this is a digital mess and not a physical mess, often you don’t realize you have a problem — until you have a problem! You don’t feel the pain of a disorganized system until you can’t find a file you need. The advantage of the original paper-based filing system was that you really had to think about where to put files so that you could locate them easily when they were needed. It becomes too easy to have files scattered all over your computer.

In order to work, a file system is required by most of the applications you come into contact with; therefore, each partition should have one. Furthermore, if a program is built for use in macOS, you will be unable to use this program on windows because programs are file system-dependent.

The second half of the chapter delves into detail about the disks themselves—the medium on which files are generally stored. Further complicating the storage issue is the need for many businesses to share documents between employees.
